Rent a Large House For Your Next Reunion

Tahoe, HomeAway Rental 269735

One of the challenges of planning a group event is finding adequate lodging.  For impersonal affairs, where attendees don't necessarily know one another or want to bunk together, a hotel is most logical.  However, for family reunions, a hotel often doesn't fit the bill.  Privacy is great (and needed), but hotels usually lack a good place for the family to just hang out

An alternative is to rent a large private home.  You may find that it's cheaper in addition to being more private and conducive to socializing in an informal way.  Pick one with a pool if there are children.  It will provide endless entertainment.  Some properties have enough outdoor space that tents can be set up for the kids, increasing sleeping space and creating a memorable night for visiting cousins.

The two best sites we've found for all over rentals are HomeAwayand Vacation Rentals By Owner.  The first is easier to search by size and amenities, but the latter also has extensive, quality listings. Both sites offer tips on protecting yourself (also for homeowners) and how to choose a rental.  You can also read and post reviews.

About Our Experience Using a Vacation Rental:
We wanted to visit some family near Tampa, Florida.  However, we needed our own place and preferred someone close to the beach.  We picked our dates and bought plane tickets and then went on both sites to search for a rental.  After choosing five or six, we sent requests to each within the budget we had chosen.  Most responded quickly and several agreed to our price.  Negotiations were via email and phone.

We were able to get a beautiful, one bedroom condo, right on Clearwater Beach, for just $700 for the week (taxes and cleaning included).  The owner emailed us an agreement which we signed and faxed back.  When we arrived, the front desk had a key for us and we got right in.  There was a large pool, to which we invited our resident family members to and everyone had a great time.  With a fully stocked kitchen, it was far cheaper and convenient to visit the local grocery store, than stay in one of the hotels down the street.  In addition, the neighborhood was perfectly quiet and serene for early morning jogs.  We had a wonderful time.

Consider renting a home for your next family reunion.
